Omaha, Nebraska Real Estate and Community Info.

The city of Omaha rests comfortably on the magnificent Missouri River, near the bull’s-eye center of the U.S. Since its founding in 1854, Omaha has grown into the urban hub of Nebraska. It’s the largest city in the state with more than 400,000 people.

In 2008, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine confirmed what most Omaha residents already knew by ranking the city No. 3 on its list of the country’s “Best Cities to Live, Work and Play.”

Five Fortune 500 companies – Berkshire Hathaway, Mutual of Omaha, Union Pacific Corporation, Peter Kiewit and Sons, Inc. and ConAgra Foods – call Omaha home.

Omaha real estate listings showcase properties built in a wide range of styles and offering an array of features.

Shopping and Dining

In Omaha, you get what many metropolitan areas promise but rarely deliver: urban excitement and convenience seamlessly blended with the laid back, relaxed feel of a smaller community.

A perfect example of this is the Old Market district. Cobblestone streets, innovative eateries, unique local pubs, charming cafes and mellow jazz clubs, and much more makes the Old Market district a great example of a repurposed older urban center.

Property in Omaha’s urban and suburban landscape is peppered with several other entertainment venues, indoor and outdoor shopping centers, quaint original boutiques, cultural and historical landmarks, and every flavor of eatery you could want.

Omaha is famous for its steak; however, when you’re in the mood for something different, check out the city’s delicious mix of multi-cultural cuisines:

Parks and Recreation

If you’re checking out Omaha real estate listings and are into outdoor and indoor, active and passive recreational activities, chances are excellent that you’ll find what you’re looking for and more in this diverse, upwardly mobile community.

The City of Omaha’s Parks and Recreation Department maintains six regional and 13 community parks, as well as numerous campgrounds, community centers, ice rinks, marinas, swimming pools and more than 80 miles of recreational trails.

Heartland of America Park sits on the Missouri River near the downtowns of both Omaha and Council Bluffs. It contains the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, which is a scenic footbridge that spans the width of the river, connecting the two cities.

Two of the nation’s longest and most popular trails are easily accessible in Omaha: the American Discovery Trail, which stretches across the whole country, and the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, which is about 3,700 miles long, running from Illinois to Oregon.

Living

Many of the cities in the “farm belt” of Middle America have had to deal with the unfortunate (and largely inaccurate) stereotype associated with their location.

Some folks seem to think that urbanity and sophistication disappears in the vast “flyover country” between New York City and Los Angeles. Omaha explodes this stereotype with it’s strong economy, sophisticated dining scene, outstanding symphony and robust cultural life.

According to the U.S. census in 2010, Omaha, and its sister city across the Missouri River, Council Bluffs, Iowa, combine to form a metro area that covers eight counties (five in Nebraska, three in Iowa) and is home to approximately 865,350 residents.

Omaha’s thriving, vibrant and eclectic cultural and entertainment scene includes, but is not limited to:

Schools, Health, Transportation

Public education in Omaha is provided primarily by Omaha Public Schools. It serves more than 47,750 students in more than 75 schools.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Omaha oversees several private schools, educating about 21,500 students in 32 elementary schools and nine high schools.

There are several medical centers and hospitals in Omaha, including the following (in alphabetical order):

  • Bergan Mercy Medical Center
  • Charles Drew Health Center
  • Immanuel Medical Center
  • Lakeside Hospital
  • Mercy Hospital
  • Midlands Hospital
  • Nebraska Medical Center
  • Saint Joseph Hospital at Creighton University Medical Center
  • Douglas County Health Center
  • Methodist Hospital
  • Children's Hospital
  • Omaha Veterans Administration Hospital
  • Jennie Edmundson Hospital

Transportation options in Omaha take as many forms as are typically available in a large city. Eppley Airfield provides ten major airlines, with service to most of the large cities in the U.S. Also accessible are rental vehicles, limousines and taxis and shuttle buses.

The Union Pacific Railroad's corporate headquarters are in downtown Omaha. Amtrak passenger rail system provides service through the city, as does the Greyhound bus company.
